How Acupuncture Can Support Fertility

Trying to conceive can be an emotional and deeply personal journey. If you’re experiencing infertility, you may be carrying feelings of frustration, grief, hope and uncertainty — sometimes all at once. Please know you are not alone. Many individuals and couples face fertility challenges, and seeking support is a positive and empowering step.

Acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic approach that works to support your body’s natural reproductive processes. By helping to regulate the menstrual cycle, improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, and encourage hormonal balance, acupuncture aims to create the healthiest possible environment for conception. It can also be beneficial alongside assisted fertility treatments such as IVF, helping to support your body and calm your mind during what can feel like an intense process.

Stress plays a significant role in overall wellbeing, and fertility struggles can understandably take their toll. One of the most valued aspects of acupuncture is the deep relaxation it brings. Treatments help activate the body’s “rest and restore” response, which may positively influence reproductive health while also giving you space to pause and breathe.

Every fertility journey is unique. In our clinic, we take time to listen carefully to your story, tailoring treatments to your individual needs. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or receiving medical support, acupuncture can be a nurturing companion — supporting both your physical health and your emotional resilience along the way.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a key part of traditional Chinese medicine and has been used for over 2,000 years. It involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to help regulate and rebalance physiological processes.

Modern research suggests acupuncture may influence:

  • Hormonal regulation
  • Blood flow to the reproductive organs
  • Stress and cortisol levels
  • Nervous system balance

All of these play an important role in reproductive health.

Fertility in the UK: The Bigger Picture

Fertility challenges are increasingly common. Data from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) shows:

  • Over 52,000 patients underwent IVF treatment in the UK in recent years.
  • Around 1 in 6 couples may experience infertility during their lifetime.
  • IVF success rates vary by age — for women under 35, around 30–35% of embryo transfers result in a live birth, with rates declining steadily after age 35.

Because success rates aren’t guaranteed, many people look for supportive therapies to improve their overall wellbeing during treatment. Acupuncture is one of the most commonly chosen complementary approaches.

How Acupuncture May Support Fertility

While acupuncture is not a “magic fix,” research suggests it may support fertility in several ways:

  1. Improving Blood Flow to the Uterus and Ovaries

Studies indicate acupuncture may increase pelvic blood flow, which can help support endometrial lining development and ovarian function.

  1. Supporting Hormonal Balance

Acupuncture may influence the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian (HPO) axis — the hormonal system that regulates ovulation and menstrual cycles. This can be particularly helpful for conditions such as irregular cycles or PCOS.

  1. Reducing Stress

Trying to conceive can be emotionally taxing. High stress levels may affect ovulation and implantation. Acupuncture has been shown in multiple studies to lower cortisol levels and promote parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) nervous system activity.

  1. Supporting IVF Treatment

Some research suggests acupuncture given around the time of embryo transfer may improve pregnancy rates, although findings are mixed. Many UK fertility clinics now allow or even recommend acupuncture alongside IVF to support relaxation and overall wellbeing.

Who Might Benefit?

Acupuncture may be helpful if you are:

  • Trying to conceive naturally
  • Preparing for IVF or ICSI
  • Experiencing irregular cycles
  • Living with PCOS or endometriosis
  • Recovering after miscarriage
  • Feeling stressed or anxious about fertility

I treat both women and men — sperm health, motility and stress levels can also be supported through acupuncture.
